Product….Stickiness? pt. 2

Since I did my last blog post on product stickiness and mentioned some of the world's most famous companies, let me break down what hinders the produproduct'slete stickiness. Some of these may be more generational than others, so this may or may not depend ultimately on what these companies are trying to accomplish in their bottom line.

Social media platforms like TikTok and Instagram have become integral parts of our daily lives, offering endless entertainment and connection. But have you ever wondered what makes these platforms so addictive?

TikTok

TikTok has taken the world by storm with its addictive content feed and engaging features. Here's what TikTok does to keep users hooked:

  1. Addictive Content FeedTikTok's'“ "For Y" u" page delivers a never-ending stream of short-form videos tailored to the accuser's interests through its algorithm-driven feed. The platform's “endless scro" l" feature encourages users to spend hours on the app, consuming various content formats, from challenges to comedic skits. For example, the algorithm learns from user interactions and preferences, serving up content users will likely enjoy based on their past behavior.

  2. Engaging Features: TikTok offers a range of creative tools and features that empower users to produce captivating content easily. Users can experiment with filters, effects, and editing tools to enhance their videos, fostering a culture of creativity and self-expression. Notably, the platform's duet and stitch features allow users to collaborate with others and remix existing content, encouraging participation and engagement.

  3. Trend CultureTikTok's trend-driven culture encourages users to participate actively in creating and sharing content. Users jump on the bandwagon of popular trends and challenges, contributing to the platform's viral nature and sense of community. For instance, challenges like the” Renega" e" dance and the "Flip the Swit" h" challenge have become cultural phenomena, with users across the globe participating and sharing their interpretations.

  4. Personalized ExperienceTikTok's algorithm analyzes user behavior to recommend content tailored to the user's preferences. TikTok increases user engagement and retention, giving users the content they will likely enjoy. Additionally, the platform iterates on its algorithm based on user feedback to improve the user experience continuously.

However, there are also areas where TikTok falls short in achieving stickiness:

  1. Privacy Concerns: TikTok has faced scrutiny over its data privacy practices, raising concerns among users about the security of their personal information. Despite efforts to address these concerns, some users remain wary of sharing personal data on the platform.

  2. Content Moderation: TikTok has faced criticism for handling content moderation, with concerns about inappropriate or harmful content slipping through the cracks. While the platform has implemented measures to combat this issue, such as community guidelines and content filters, challenges persist in ensuring a safe and positive user experience.

Instagram

Instagram is another powerhouse in the social media landscape, known for its visual content and community engagement Here's what Instagram does to keep users coming back:

  1. Visually Appealing Content Instagram's focus on visual storytelling makes it a go-to platform for sharing photos and videos. Users can showcase their lives in a visually compelling way, using filters, editing tools, and aesthetic trends to enhance their content. As a result, Instagram has become a hub for creativity and self-expression, with users curating their feeds to reflect their style and interests.

  2. Community Engagement: Instagram fosters a sense of community through features like comments, likes, and direct messaging. Users can interact with friends, family, and influencers, building connections and relationships on the platform. Instagram communities, including niche interest groups and local communities, also provide opportunities for like-minded users to connect and share common interests.

  3. Stories and Reels Instagram's Stories and Reels features offer ephemeral and short-form content that keeps users engaged and entertained. Users can share moments from their daily lives in real time, providing a glimpse into their world and fostering authenticity. Brands and businesses leverage these features for marketing and promotional purposes, creating engaging content that resonates with their audience.

  4. Discoverability Instagram's explore page and hashtag system make it easy for users to discover new content and accounts aligned with their interests. Users can explore trending topics, find new accounts, and engage with content from creators worldwide. As a result, Instagram enhances user engagement and encourages users to explore more of the platform's content.

However, Instagram also faces challenges in achieving stickiness:

  1. Algorithm Changes Instagram's algorithm changes have been met with mixed reactions from users, with some feeling frustrated by the platform's shifting content priorities. Users may struggle to adapt to changes in their feed and discoverability, affecting their overall user experience and satisfaction.

  2. Comparison Culture Instagram's emphasis on curated and filtered content can contribute to feelings of inadequacy and comparison among users. Some users may experience pressure to present an idealized version of themselves on the platform, leading to adverse effects. In summary, TikTok and Instagram have revolutionized connecting, creating, and consuming content. While both platforms excel in many areas, they also face difficulty maintaining stickiness. By understanding their strengths and weaknesses, these platforms can continue to evolve and innovate, keeping users engaged and coming back for more in the ever-changing social media landscape.
